Size A (.006") for the finest freshwater wraps, D (.010") when ease and durability matter more than looks. And nylon does not darken under epoxy — it goes translucent, so the blank's colour bleeds through your colour choice.
A (.006 inch) is the refined freshwater choice: smallest finished diameter, hardest to pack tight. B (.008) wraps like D but finishes closer to A. D (.010) is the forgiving workhorse for heavy and offshore rods — easiest to wrap without gaps.
Thread breaking strength is 2–5 lb regardless of size. That number exists to make a point: it is tension, not blank strength, that breaks things when a wrap goes wrong — over-tight wraps can crack blank surfaces, which is why every wrapping guide obsesses over consistent moderate tension instead of strength.
Nylon thread does not darken under epoxy — it goes translucent, so the finished wrap shows the blend of thread colour and whatever is underneath. White over black comes out black. Yellow over blue comes out green-ish. Builders discovering this on a finished rod is the single most-repeated 'gotcha' in the craft's threads.
Hence the advice repeated across every source: test-wrap your colour on scrap blank and wet it with finish before committing to the rod. Two minutes of scrap work prevents one stripped guide section.
Colour preserver is a barrier coat that stops finish soaking into the thread — that is the whole job. Camp one applies it always, including over NCP (no-colour-preserver-needed) thread, because mislabelled spools and air trapped under decorative wraps have stung them before. Camp two skips it on guide wraps entirely and uses underwraps instead, preferring nylon's natural look.
Both camps agree on what preserver does not do: block UV. U-40 states on its own FAQ that none of these products act as a UV barrier, and that reds and blues treated with preserver fade faster, not slower. Buy CP for the wet look, not for protection claims.
