Why is my rod finish fisheyeing?

Usually silicone contamination — from syringes, monofilament, skin oils or lubricant-carrying thread — though a too-thin coat or over-sanded surface produces the same craters. Most fisheyes fix in place without stripping the rod.

What a fisheye is

Small circular craters where the finish pulled back from a spot, exposing the surface underneath. The film does not wet that spot, so it retreats from it while curing — contamination changes the surface energy, and the epoxy votes with its feet.

Cause 1: silicone, named by the manufacturers

Flex Coat's own tip sheet names the mechanism directly: silicone in medical syringes bought at a drug store, or silicone on monofilament, can cause the finish to fisheye or separate from blank and wraps. Hand cream is the other classic vector — anything silicone-based transferred to the blank by fingers during handling.

One thread type carries a documented version of this risk: Madeira Poly Neon, an embroidery thread adopted by high-end builders, ships with a silicone lubricant baked in for machine tensioners — the importer's own page says the lubricant can repel certain finishes and recommends extra coats of colour preserver. A wrap made with it and no preserver is a named fisheye risk, not a superstition.

Cause 2 and 3: application, not contamination

Epoxy maker System Three lists two non-contamination causes: the coat applied too thin to wet through, and a previous surface sanded too smooth — fine sanding removes the tooth the next coat needs to key into. If your fisheyes cluster after a re-coat of a polished surface, cause three is yours.

Fixing it without stripping

Let the coat cure hard. Sand the craters out with 120–150 grit — coarse enough to reopen tooth — apply another seal coat working into the craters, let that cure hard, sand flat, and recoat to finish. System Three's procedure is for marine epoxy but the chemistry generalises; Flex Coat's rod-specific guidance agrees on the rescue path.

A soft, tacky finish that never cures is a different defect — unequal ratio or short mixing — and Flex Coat's own remedy there is to recoat over the tacky finish, mixed carefully this time, rather than strip.
