Cork feels warmer, transmits feedback better and shapes to the hand; EVA costs less, shrugs off abuse, fish slime and sunlight, and outlives cork. It is a feel-versus-durability trade, and serious builders own both kinds of rod.
Cork grips are sold by grade — flor-grade and better is dense with small pits; bargain grades are porous and will crater within seasons. The published grade scales exist because cork quality varies enormously within one product category, and a premium blank wrapped onto cheap cork wastes both. Top grades of a 10-inch grip alone can run $80.
Cork seals and cleans up with light sanding, which is why custom builders like it: a grip can be reamed, shaped and blended to the owner's hand over the life of the rod.
EVA foam costs a fraction of good cork, does not pit, tolerates sunscreen, bait and salt water without complaint, and weighs little. Hypalon (chloroprene) sits at the tough end of the foam family and dominates big-game and offshore grips for exactly those reasons.
The trade is feel: foam insulates and deadens, transmitting less of what the blank is doing to the hand, and it cannot be reshaped the way cork can.
