Three methods exist and they do not agree: Fuji's New Guide Concept chart, the K·R Concept chart, and a static test done with the rod under load. Published layouts get you close; the static test is how every method ends.
NGC's core idea, published since the mid-1990s, is that a guide train has one job: produce two straight line paths — reel to choke point, choke point to tip — while using the smallest ring the line and its knots can pass through at every position. Ring size, not guide count, dominates weight and friction.
Everything else in NGC is procedure for finding those two lines and that minimum ring size. On a properly built spinning layout, the running guides past the choke point are identical in size and frame style.
Introduced around 2012–2014 as an extension of NGC for braided line, which is softer and more tangle-prone than the mono NGC was designed around. Its signature move is the Rapid Choke: the choke point sits closer to the reel than classic NGC places it, because braid tolerates a tighter turn radius than mono. Frame choice per position is prescribed too — KL-H for reduction guides, KB mid-rod, KT running — in the name of the lightest finished rod.
Telling detail from Fuji's own distributor: the published chart is ranked as a fallback. When the actual reel is known, their reel-specific placement method outranks any generic chart. The industry side of the craft itself says the chart is where you start, not where you finish.
Tape the guides on loosely, run the line, put a modest bend in the rod, and look: the line either runs straight through each guide or cuts into the frame. Move the offending guide until the contact point sits centred in the ring. Under load, the blank's actual curve appears — and it is never exactly the curve the chart assumed.
This is the step the published procedures themselves hand you over to. The chart narrows the search; the static test finds the position.

A builder who sees only one method's output tends to treat it as ground truth and then fight the static test to 'correct' the rod back toward the chart. Run the test last and trust it.
